Background of the Study
Personal protective equipment (PPE) plays a crucial role in preventing the transmission of infectious diseases among healthcare workers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, PPE—such as face masks, gloves, gowns, and face shields—became essential in reducing exposure to the virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasized PPE as a critical line of defense for hospital staff treating infected patients (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2023).
In Bauchi State, hospitals experienced significant challenges related to PPE availability, quality, and adherence to proper usage. Research indicates that inadequate PPE and improper usage contribute to high infection rates among hospital staff (Usman & Salisu, 2024). Conversely, healthcare facilities with strict PPE protocols reported lower infection rates. Understanding the effectiveness of PPE usage in Bauchi State is essential for improving healthcare worker safety in future health crises.
This study will assess the impact of PPE usage on infection rates among hospital staff in Bauchi State. It will evaluate compliance levels, challenges in PPE availability, and the relationship between PPE adherence and infection rates.
Statement of the Problem
Hospital staff face high risks of infection, especially in pandemics where they have direct contact with infected patients. While PPE serves as a protective barrier, its effectiveness depends on proper usage, availability, and adherence to guidelines. Inadequate PPE or poor compliance with safety protocols can lead to increased infection rates among healthcare workers.
Despite the importance of PPE, there is limited research on its effectiveness in reducing infection rates among hospital staff in Bauchi State. Understanding PPE-related challenges and identifying gaps in adherence can help improve safety measures for healthcare workers. This study will investigate the relationship between PPE usage and infection rates to determine areas requiring intervention.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of PPE usage on infection rates among hospital staff in Bauchi State.
2. To identify challenges in the availability and proper use of PPE in hospitals.
3. To recommend strategies for improving PPE adherence among healthcare workers.
Research Questions
1. How does PPE usage affect infection rates among hospital staff in Bauchi State?
2. What challenges do hospital staff face regarding PPE availability and proper use?
3. What measures can improve PPE adherence in hospitals?
Research Hypotheses
1. PPE usage significantly reduces infection rates among hospital staff.
2. Inadequate availability of PPE contributes to higher infection rates in hospitals.
3. Proper training on PPE usage improves compliance and reduces infections among hospital staff.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on healthcare workers in public and private hospitals in Bauchi State. It will assess PPE availability, compliance, and its correlation with infection rates. Limitations may include variations in PPE quality and inconsistencies in data reporting on infection rates.
Definitions of Terms
